			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I don’t need to say how important bloggers are in modern communications, but if you have any doubts <a href="http://http://thefuturebuzz.com/2009/01/12/social-media-web-20-internet-numbers-stats/">I picked up the following stats from the Future Buzz blog</a>:</p>
<ul>
<li>133,000,000 – number of blogs indexed by Technorati since 2002</li>
<li>346,000,000 – number of people globally who read blogs (comScore March 2008)</li>
<li>900,000 – average number of blog posts in a 24 hour period (seems a bit low)</li>
<li>77% &#8211; percentage of active Internet users who read blogs</li>
</ul>
<p>This naturally presents a golden opportunity to convey your message.  And if you have a very sector specific target audience there is bound to be a multitude of blogs that will cover the topic.</p>
<p>Yet, I still hear of companies and agencies that go about pitching the wrong way.</p>
<p>It is certainly harder to pitch to a blogger than a journalist (although there can be a correlation).</p>
<p>The media needs stories.  The media relies on PRs to supply those stories / interviewees on a regular basis, it has a continuous appetite.   A relationship with a journalist is very helpful but not essential for getting your release or article published.</p>
<p>A blogger does not need a PRs’ stories, of course they need material but that can come from a number of sources.  A blogger might post every day, week, month – there is not the same pressure generally to deliver content.  Gaining coverage with a blogger relies far more on relationships.</p>
<p>It is a different dynamic: a journalist is paid to generate content for an organisation, a blogger tends to be working for him or herself, often for nothing, and they can relate to their blog in a very personal way.</p>
<p>(With way over 100 million blogs these observations can be nothing but generalisations, there are bound to be exceptions but I think they are rough guidelines nevertheless).</p>
<p>For me the key difference is that I can pitch to a media channel whether I have or not in the past worked with them, it is not too important if I have a good idea or subject – I would not do the same with a blogger.</p>
<p>The key, I believe, to taping into the blogosphere is spending the time to develop relationships, learn about individual blogs.</p>
<p>Use Twitter to initiate a conversation.  Better still if your client has a blog leave (relevant insightful) comments on the target blog.  It will help show you have some knowledge of social media, which will help gain acceptance, it will show interest and it might make the blogger feel that they are obliged to reciprocate.  It is a first step in the pitching process.</p>
<p>So, for me, it is the conversation before that really counts.  Of course you might contact them directly and succeed with a brazen salesy press release, but you might be deleted as spam more likely.</p>
<p>And remember, if you have developed a reputation though social media or indeed traditional media then you might find that you are pulling in interest from bloggers.</p>
<p>This all takes time and that is where it goes wrong: PRs and clients don’t often have the luxury of time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I must confess I have neglected to do much with my LinkedIn profile.</p>
<p>I signed up and then essentially accepted invitations to be on my network.  I mean how much time is there to spend on it?</p>
<p>I had been looking to update and smarten my profile for <em>passing traffic</em> (contacts that had time to look), just to look professional.  Perhaps I was starting to awaken to its potential.  Well on Friday I got a little shove to do a lot more when I attended the first seminar on LinkedIn by networking authority and trainer <a href="http://www.kintish.co.uk">Will Kintish</a>.</p>
<p>Will has been showing thousands of professionals how to network face to face.  But like me he initially had his doubts about LinkedIn, can social media really give you the same contact and interaction as meeting someone in person?</p>
<p>Will realised that you do not have to compare like with like.  You can use LinkedIn as a highly targeted networking and lead generation tool in its own right, as well as a place to advertise your services and substance.</p>
<p>Will made key points about LinkedIn showing off the power of testimonials, its ability to reach hard to contact professionals (who possibly do not network so much offline) and the huge numbers of contacts you would want to make &#8211; far more than you could possibly achieve, the potential being so great.</p>
<p>What I think I came away with is that LinkedIn is easy to use, has good functionality and tremendous business development potential.  You could find much, possibly all your business, through LinkedIn if you really wanted.  It takes enthusiasm and time, but it can pay off big style.</p>
<p>I think I took away the view that it is time to take another look at LinkedIn and what it can do &#8211; a testament to Will&#8217;s enthusiasm and training.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>They certainly do, prospective clients need to be aware of how they present themselves.</p>
<p>A few months ago I pitched to a design agency in Old Trafford that in a word were <em>rude</em>.  And in another word <em>aggressive</em>.</p>
<p>I was forced to present in half an hour and it was more like an interrogation than an exchange of information and views.  I did not get it: I told them their brief was too narrow and unworkable and they should expand their target press.</p>
<p>Only a few months down the line and they seem to have sacked their PR and are going to combine the role with an in-house account exec who I assume will be a client handler and get all the PR they need as long as the person can write press releases according to an advert I have come across.</p>
<p>I believe this is an underestimation of what PRs do and so they will miss out on opportunities, but also doing it on the cheap will be selling themselves short.</p>
<p>Still, when I got a thank you note for attending the pitch saying that &#8220;I would be put on file&#8221; I knew it confirmed I had a lucky escape.</p>
<p>In a competitive world we override our instincts, we really need to listen to them more.  On the reverse side those hiring suppliers should think about they present themselves it is all part of their PR and how they come across might determine the supplier they deserve.</p>
